Outdoor learning

There is always something to do here. Life skills and core subjects can be learnt through a more practical and hands-on way of learning. We feel that not enough time is given to Learners, and sometimes all it takes is “that bit more time” for learners to feel settled in their environment and where meaningful learning can then take place. Therefore, our outdoor learning is based on blocks of weekly visits.

Activities at Basils Farm are structured around Topics and Schemes, following the National Curriculum. Activities are structured around the needs of small groups and can involve most subjects.

We develop life skills through hands-on activities based around the farm, which can involve cooking and growing food, creating natural dyes for painting, making prehistoric tools and re-enacting stories and drama. Mathematics can be used while helping to build animal houses and fix broken fences. Activities are developed with Teachers and Carers to meet the Learners needs.

What visitors say

“Basils farm is a wonderful place, an oasis away from our usually busy lives. Our son, who can be very anxious around animals (even though he talks about them non-stop), now has the confidence to offer Blue, Max, and Ziggy mints from his palm, which is huge for him. Sharon’s no-nonsense and yet kind way means that both animals and children trust her implicitly; she is kind, gentle and passionate about children, young people and adults, particularly those with additional needs, always striving to improve her provision and build upon her skills for them.”

- Emma

“This truly magical outdoor setting provides a unique and stimulating environment for learning and development.

I have seen first-hand how regular forest School sessions help develop self-esteem and confidence. There is something very special about sitting around a campfire with new friends and sharing your day’s adventures.”

– Carolyn

“Welcoming and friendly. Loved by children and adults alike. A very happy place to explore.”

- Lesley
