Explore the outdoors in Dunstable with a range of activities at Basils Farm. We offer a wide range of programmes, courses and events for people of all ages. From helping out on our allotment to learning about animal care, there’s so much to do at Basils Farm.
We work with the permaculture philosophy and with nature to produce rather than against it. There are always muddy boots and hands here at Basils Farm.
We grow, care and cook the vegetables which have grown in soil that has been enriched from the compost,
which the chickens have “scratched” out over the winter.
The fruit trees include Apple, Cherry, Damson and Pear, are also used for pies, crumbles and jams, or for the 'picking' as we work. During the Spring, we make wonderful pesto from the wild Garlic in the woods. In the Autumn, hedgerows are abundant with berries which we forage.
We believe that when people of all ages collaborate to support each other, share ideas and surplus, a bond is formed, which fosters a sense of community. It is a very relaxed, social atmosphere, with laughs and chatter and tea, “and where there’s tea, there’s cake.” (Mackesy, 2019). Suitable for individuals and small groups in half or whole 'mixed' day sessions.
Individuals and groups can help with the care and handling from the ground of the horses and other animals. Learners become more aware of their behaviour and its effect on the horse’s interaction with them. They are also able to collect the eggs from the chickens and enjoy and play with the dogs.
